The return of students to classrooms also marks a return to homework.
Students will once again fill their late afternoon and evening hours in search of answers to math and science questions, puzzling over syntax and researching for papers. But students can feel less burdened and less anxious this year because of a Girard Public Library homework initiative.
The program is known as HomeworkKansas: a live, interactive computer-generated tutoring service providing homework help in math, science, English and social studies. Through HomeworkKansas, tutors help students in all grade levels — kindergarten through high school and intro-college level. The service is available 7-days a week from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. For most subjects, tutors can also provide assistance in Spanish.
“The Girard Public Library is pleased to offer students access to a network of more than 2,000 professional tutors,” said Terri Harley, Director. “HomeworkKansas is a safe, secure environment for our students, as all tutors have been screened via rigorous background and reference checks.”
Many HomeworkKansas tutors are also subject specialists, so students get quality help with arithmetic, dividing decimals, AP calculus, chemistry or the finer points of noun clauses.
“It’s a terrific program that can be utilized by students and their parents, as well as by teachers,” said Harley. “Students love it because tutors work at their pace and each session is focused on the student’s individual homework need. Parents like it because tutors don’t provide answers, just good homework assistance.”
HomeworkKansas is available via a partnership between the State Library of Kansas and local libraries across the state. In 2007, Kansas students logged over 20,000 sessions via HomeworkKansas.
Stop by the information desk at the Girard Public Library and ask for assistance in accessing the service from the library, or, from home, go to www.homeworkkansas.org.
