GIRARD -

GateHouse Media, the parent company of The Girard Press and The Morning Sun, announced Tuesday that it is closing The Press.
The March 25 edition will be the last of the publication.
“The decision to close the newspaper was not an easy one,” said Stephen Wade, editor and publisher of both papers. He noted that economic challenges have overwhelmed the newspaper's ability to continue printing weekly.
The Morning Sun, with a circulation that overlaps much of The Press’, will continue to serve the area.
“We are not contemplating a change in our commitment to Crawford County and specifically the Girard-area. We simply will be providing news on a timelier basis,” said Wade.
Popular weekly features including the Trojan Tribune and reports from Arcadia, Walnut and Farlington will continue in the Wednesday edition of The Morning Sun. The paper will also print a regular Girard Chamber of Commerce page and the St. Paul High School newspaper.
Those who subscribe only to The Press will be offered the Wednesday edition of The Morning Sun.
The Morning Sun blended operations with The Girard Press in Nov. 2003.
