GIRARD -

Charles Wayne Filkel, 80, of Girard, died Friday at Girard Medical Center after a brief bout with pancreatic cancer, complicated by pulmonary fibrosis.
Mr. Filkel was born May 15, 1928, in Girard, the son of Clair and Charline Martin Filkel. He was raised by his grandparents, Charles and Mabel Martin, on a farm southwest of Girard. Mr. Filkel farmed that property from the time he was 15 years old until his retirement earlier this year. He also worked for many years as a carpenter in Girard and the surrounding area.
Mr. Filkel attended Cyclone School southwest of Girard. He graduated from Girard High School in 1945.
On May 27, 1950, he married Maxine Baker. She survives at the home. He is also survived by his three children: C. Wesley Filkel, Parsons, Janet Van Scyoc and her husband Steve, Leawood, and Kelly Filkel, Redondo Beach, Calif. Mr. Filkel was very proud of the fact that he was able to put all three of his children through college.
In his youth, Mr. Filkel was an avid sportsman and a keen shot, often winning turkey shoots.
