GHS Girls score second place win in Optimist Invite
With three competitors finishing in the gold, the Girard girls tracksters brought home a silver in the team competition Friday at the annual Optimist Club Invitational track meet at Frank Jameson Field.
Seniors Chelsea Boore and Katie Gull led the Trojans in the individual events with three first-place finishes between them.
Boore captured first-place honors in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet 3 inches and in the long jump, flying 16-2 for the win. Gull led the field in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12 minutes 47.45 seconds.
Other top three finishers for the Trojans were Jordan Mahnken in the javelin with a throw of 110-11 and junior Whitney Southard in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.49-seconds.
The Girard 4X400 meter relay team brought in the silver, clocking a time of 4:21.96. The 4X100 meter relay team finished third with a time of 52.45 seconds.

Trojan boys capture fourth in annual Optimist meet
Working off eight, top-three finishers, the Girard Trojans secured a fourth place finish in the 2008 Girard Optimist Club Invitational track meet at Frank Jameson Field Friday.
Led by first-place finishes by senior Lonnie Mengarelli and juniors Eric Strukel and Johnny Webb, the Trojans posted a team total 73 points in the meet. Joplin took first-place honor with 123.5 points, followed by Pittsburg in second with 113 points and Carthage in third with 96 points. A total of 23 schools competed in this years event.
In the field events, Mengarelli captured gold in the boys discus with throw of 150-7 in the first round of the finals. Webb out-jumped the competition with a leap of 6-6 for the first place spot in the boys high jump.
Webb also captured first in the boys triple jump, winning with a 42-1 leap, a full foot better than the second place finisher. Mengarelli finished third in the shot putt with a throw of 49-3.75.
On the track, Strukel won the boys 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 2.29 seconds.
