GIRARD -

Counselor Marilyn Hey spoke with parents of seniors about the college process in the John E. Shireman Auditorium on Sept. 15.
She began by informing them about the types of colleges and their admission criteria, including four-year public and private, two-year public and private, and vocational schools.
Mrs. Hey also spoke about requirements for admission to college, including scoring well on college entrance exams, taking the ACT and SAT, requesting a student transcript from the high school counselor, applying for admission, and completing miscellaneous forms such as health forms and dorm contracts.
After giving some examples of tuition, book, and dorm fees, she spoke about opportunities for financial aid. Students can apply for aid by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) starting in January 2009. Students can also apply for scholarships from other organizations, including local groups.
Following the meeting, Mrs. Hey said, “We meet with parents of seniors so that we can help make sure they and their students are on the same page regarding college information.”
Mrs. Hey will have a financial aid and scholarship meeting for all seniors and their parents in January.
